DIY Fidget Spinners: Make Your Own Spinner

Last year was all about going big or going home. Drones and hoverboards were all the rage. Nobody in a million years could have ever predicted that the hottest gadget of 2017 would be a hand spinner, but here we are now in the midst of the fidget revolution. How can a little toy like this become so darn popular?

Part of the appeal is their accessibility. Even if you can't find one for under ten bucks, you can always make your own. We're actually going to show you how to make the best fidget spinners out of some basic materials that you can find around the house.

Wooden DIY Spinner

Charlie Hamilton, otherwise known as YoungWoodworker, is a YouTuber who does a lot of woodworking projects. He has come up with an awesome idea for a DIY fidget spinner. Naturally, he decided to make it out of wood. Using a band saw and a 22mm drill bit, Charlie shows you how to make your own fidget spinner out of scratch, and the end product is beautiful! He provides all the information that you need to make it, from the paper template, all the way up to the bearings and type of drill bit used, found in the description of his video.

Warning: Be careful if you are going to follow these steps! Using a saw can be extremely dangerous if you don't how. If you're a minor, then make sure you're under adult supervision.

If done correctly, you will be left with a gorgeous wooden tri-spinner that looks like it came from some high end custom spinner shop. This YoungWoodworker has a bright future ahead of him!

3D Printer Fidget Spinner

If you have a 3D printer, then you have the ability to make your own spinners from scratch. All you will need is the bearings. In this video, 3D Printing Nerd creates a 3D printer spinner from scratch. He actually creates the template himself too, so you can see exactly what it takes to make your own spinner using 3D design software.

Note: If you don't wish to create the actual template, you can easily download one here.

He creates the template in about five minutes, and prints it out, which takes about a half hour. After demonstrating his creation, he goes back into the software and tweaks it to create an upgraded tri spinner. Last but not least, he also creates a five-sided plastic DIY spinner.

Lego DIY Spinner

Can you make a real spinner out of Legos? Sure, why not? Legos are one of the most popular toys of all time, probably because the possibilities are virtually endless. Now we have Lego DIY Spinners that are very easy to make and fully functioning!

Believe it or not, the YouTuber in this video only used 12 pieces to make it, plus 4 regular spinner bearings. Anyone could create this DIY spinner. Last but not least, he uses glue to bind it all together, and there you have it, a custom DIY lego spinner.

In the video, he also provides an alternative way of making this spinner without bearings, just legos, glue and 3 coins.

Edible Fidget Spinner (Candy Mod)

These YouTubers figured out a way to make an edible DIY fidget spinner out of Starburst and Jolly Ranchers. (skip ahead to 4:14). This seems to be part of a bigger trend called "candy modding". Apparently, you can make a spinner out of anything.

They start by creating a mold out of their existing fidget spinners using a purple silicon substance. Once it dries, they melt the candy and place it into the mold. After that, they microwave it for about 15 seconds and place it in the refrigerator to dry. Once that is ready, they place the bearing and finger caps and it actually spins quite well, especially for a spinner made almost entirely out of candy!

Note: Unfortunately he uses a hot glue gun to put the Starburst spinner together, so it isn't 100% edible, but it still works just fine and looks amazing. You can also try melting the edges together with a torch or lighter, instead of using a hot glue gun.
